Short description of Tubmanburg
Tubmanburg was built on iron ore and the mines that made it have left the town a strange inheritance. The deepest of the worked pits has filled with groundwater over the decades and become a lake of an intense unnatural blue, ringed by red spoil and returning bush. People drive all the way out from the capital simply to look at it and photograph it. The town below is a market centre for the Bomi hills with rusting mine gear still standing at its edges. The water is heavy with minerals and is not a safe place to swim.
