Short description of Sapo National Park
Sapo protects the largest surviving block of lowland rainforest in the country and the second largest in the whole of West Africa, a closed canopy of enormous trees along the Sinoe river. Pygmy hippo and forest elephant live here and are almost never seen, which is worth knowing before setting out. What visitors do get is genuine primary forest, chimpanzee calls, hornbills and a river crossed by canoe to reach the camps. Access needs a permit that has to be arranged in the capital well in advance. The roads leading in are only passable during the very driest months.
