Description
Sylhet lies in a basin of tea gardens and flooded wetland under the Meghalaya hills, and the shrine of Shah Jalal in the middle of the town is one of the most visited Sufi sites in the subcontinent. Jaflong on the Indian border is where the Piyain comes down out of the hills carrying boulders, and boats and barrows work the riverbed for stone all day. Ratargul is a freshwater swamp forest paddled between submerged trunks in the wet months. Most Bangladeshis in Britain came from these villages. The division was voted into East Pakistan in a referendum at partition rather than being assigned.
