Description
Bagerhat was built in the fifteenth century out of mangrove swamp by a Turkish general called Khan Jahan Ali, who cleared the ground, dug freshwater tanks and put up an entire brick city in a generation. UNESCO listed the mosque city in 1985. The Sixty Dome Mosque is the largest of it, a hall of sixty pillars carrying seventy-seven domes, and the count in the name has never matched the roof. Nine Dome Mosque and Singair Mosque stand along the same road. Khan Jahan's own tomb is on the edge of his tank. Khan Jahan dug more than three hundred tanks to make the ground habitable.
