Description
Puthia holds the densest group of Hindu temples in Bangladesh, all of them built by one line of zamindars between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries and all standing within a short walk of one another around a rectangular tank. The Govinda temple in the palace courtyard is covered on every surface in terracotta plaques of scenes from the epics. The Shiva temple by the water is the largest of its kind in the country. Puthia Rajbari, the family palace, faces them across the green. Rajshahi and its mango orchards are half an hour west. The estate was broken up after the zamindari system was abolished in 1950.
