Description
Srimangal is the tea capital of Bangladesh, a small town among the estates that grow nearly all of the country's tea, their bushes covering the low hills in every direction, planted by the British from the 1850s and worked ever since by labourers brought from central India. The seven-layer tea invented in a stall here separates into visible bands in the glass and nobody has copied it convincingly. Lawachara national park in the hills holds hoolock gibbons. Madhabpur Lake sits among the bushes. Khasi and Manipuri villages keep their own languages inside the estates. The estates run on rainfall of four thousand millimetres a year and the wet months are unnavigable.
