Description
Swarupkathi in Pirojpur grows more guavas than anywhere in Bangladesh, and because the orchards stand on strips of raised earth between canals, the fruit leaves them by boat and is sold the same way. From July to September the canal at Bhimruli fills every morning with wooden boats heaped to the gunwales in green fruit, and the buyers work from other boats. Neighbouring Atghar Kuriana runs a wholesale version of the same thing. Floating markets for timber and for seedlings work the same canals. The whole trade shuts when the season ends. The season falls in the monsoon, which is when the canals carry enough water to work.
