Description
Suomenlinna (🇸🇪 Sveaborg) is a historic sea fortress spread across a group of islands just off the coast of Helsinki and ranks among Finland's most important cultural landmarks. Built by Sweden in the mid-18th century, the fortress is a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its massive bastions, stone ramparts, cannon emplacements, and historic tunnels. Among its best-known attractions are the Suomenlinna Museum and Vesikko, the only surviving Finnish submarine from the Second World War. At the same time, Suomenlinna is a vibrant residential district with historic buildings, cafés, scenic coastal paths, and expansive green spaces. Just a short ferry ride from central Helsinki, the islands are one of the Finnish capital's most popular destinations, combining history, nature, and maritime charm in a unique setting.
