Description
St Helier is the capital of Jersey and the administrative and commercial heart of the largest Channel Island. The town wraps around a wide harbour where Elizabeth Castle sits on a tidal islet, reached on foot at low water and by amphibious ferry the rest of the time. Its centre holds the covered Central Market, the Victorian fish market, the granite houses of the Royal Square and a waterfront line of bars and restaurants. Jersey Museum and the Maritime Museum tell the story of the island and of the German occupation. St Helier is where the ferries from France and England arrive and the base most visitors use.
