Description
Gorey is a fishing harbour on Jersey's east coast beneath Mont Orgueil, the castle that has guarded the crossing to Normandy for eight centuries. The fortress climbs its rock in a stack of walls, towers and stairways, and the French coast is visible from the top on a clear day. Below it a curve of painted houses, boatyards and restaurants faces a harbour that dries out twice a day, with the oyster beds of the Royal Bay of Grouville exposed at low water. Small ferries cross from here to Normandy in the warm months. The neolithic passage grave of La Hougue Bie stands a short way inland.
