Description
South Caicos was the salt capital of the Turks and Caicos and the ponds, walls and windmill mountings of that trade still cover the flats behind Cockburn Harbour. The industry collapsed and the island became a fishing port instead, landing most of the conch and lobster the country exports. Divers come for the wall that starts a few hundred metres offshore and drops to two thousand metres, with almost nobody else in the water. Wild horses and donkeys roam the interior. Boats cross from Providenciales in ninety minutes. The airstrip takes flights from Providenciales. The island has about a thousand people.
