Description
Soufrière sits in a drowned volcanic crater at the southwest tip of Dominica, and the bay it opens onto is a marine reserve. Geothermal vents in the seabed release streams of warm bubbles through the reef a few metres down, which is why the site is called Champagne Reef and why it is the best known snorkelling spot on the island. Scotts Head, a steep headland joined to the shore by a narrow pebble spit, closes the bay at its southern end with the Atlantic on one side and the Caribbean on the other.
