Description
The Kalinago Territory runs for about six kilometres along the rough Atlantic east coast and holds the largest surviving indigenous community in the Caribbean, roughly three thousand people on land held collectively rather than individually. The Kalinago were the people the Europeans called Caribs and gave the sea its name. Kalinago Barana Autê below the road is a reconstructed village where the crafts still practised here are shown, above all the waterproof larouma reed basketry woven in two layers. The coast below is all cliffs and black sand.
