Description
Roseau is the capital of Dominica and where the great majority of visitors arrive, since the cruise berth sits directly against the town and the island's airports are small and far away. It is a low town of about fifteen thousand people, wedged between the sea and a wall of green mountains that rise almost immediately behind it. French colonial street names survive alongside West Indian gingerbread houses with fretwork verandas in various states of repair. The Botanic Gardens still keep a school bus crushed by a baobab in the hurricane of 1979 exactly where it fell.
