Short description of São Tomé
São Tomé is the only real town in the country and one of the oldest European foundations anywhere in the tropics, laid out in the fifteenth century on a shallow bay. The fort of São Sebastião still guards the entrance and now holds the national museum and its colonial and religious collections. The cathedral was begun barely seven years after the first settlers landed. Pastel shophouses lean over the streets around the main square and the covered market trades cocoa, spices and fish. Every island tour, dive boat, hire car and flight to the second island leaves from here.
