Short description of Roça Agostinho Neto
This was the largest cocoa estate in the country and it was built to work as a town in its own right, with a square, a school, a chapel, a narrow gauge tramway and a hospital whose colonnaded ward is the most photographed ruin on the island. Nothing has been restored. Families live in the old workers' quarters and will walk visitors through the yards and the machinery halls for a tip. The estate is the plainest statement anywhere of what these plantations were and what became of them. It lies half an hour north of the capital on the coast road.
