Short description of Santana
Santana is the east coast beach town, half an hour south of the capital, and the closest thing the island has to a resort address. A bungalow hotel holds a private beach and a natural pool cut into the rock, with a dive centre working the islet just offshore. The real weight of the place is a few minutes inland at Água Izé, which was the epicentre of the cocoa boom and is now part of the world heritage listing, its hospital staircase collapsing photogenically into the undergrowth. Fishing boats still work the beaches on either side.
