Short description of Santo António
Santo António has fewer than three thousand inhabitants and is still the capital of its own autonomous region, which makes it one of the smallest places anywhere to hold that title. It was founded at the start of the sixteenth century, served as the colonial capital for a hundred years and was sacked by French privateers along the way. A small fort still watches over the bay and two old churches stand among the pastel houses. In August the whole town performs the Auto de Floripes in the streets and the diaspora comes home for it.
