San Gerardo de Dota lies at around 2,200 meters in a narrow, cloud-forest-covered valley of the Talamanca Mountains and ranks among Costa Rica’s most beautiful highland regions. The secluded village is best known for sightings of the magnificent resplendent quetzal, a colorful bird that held great symbolic importance for the ancient cultures of Mesoamerica. The clear Río Savegre flows through a valley characterized by mountain forests, small farms, apple orchards, and trout farming, bordering Los Quetzales National Park. Rare highland birds, waterfalls, hiking trails, and the cool mountain air make San Gerardo de Dota a rewarding nature destination and a peaceful alternative to Costa Rica’s more heavily visited regions.
