Description
Tenorio Volcano National Park (Parque Nacional Volcán Tenorio) lies in northern Costa Rica and protects a fascinating landscape of volcanic terrain and tropical rainforest surrounding the Tenorio volcanic complex. The park is best known for the spectacular sky-blue Río Celeste, whose extraordinary color is caused by the scattering of light by tiny mineral particles where two initially clear streams meet at El Teñidero. A rainforest trail leads to the thundering Río Celeste waterfall, the intensely colored Laguna Azul, and Los Borbollones, where volcanic gases bubble through the water. Species-rich forests home to tapirs, sloths, monkeys, and numerous tropical birds, combined with the park’s striking volcanic features, make it one of northern Costa Rica’s most impressive natural destinations. The nearby town of Bijagua is the main gateway to the park and a convenient base for exploring the surrounding rainforests.
