Description
Sainte-Marie (Nosy Boraha) is a slender tropical island off Madagascar’s east coast, combining a rich pirate history with lush landscapes and a relaxed island atmosphere. The island is known for its historic pirate sites, palm-fringed beaches, coral reefs, and seasonal humpback whale sightings, as whales gather in the surrounding waters between July and September to breed and raise their calves. Ambodifotatra, the main town, features historic landmarks including the 1857 Catholic church and the island’s famous pirate cemetery. Just south lies car-free Île aux Nattes, with sandy beaches, turquoise lagoons, and excellent snorkeling. Inland forests provide habitat for lemurs, chameleons, and other endemic wildlife.
