Description
Saint Catherine (سانت كاترين) lies in the rugged highland landscape of Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula and is best known for Saint Catherine’s Monastery at the foot of Mount Sinai, traditionally identified with Jabal Musa. The town and surrounding region are among the area’s most important sacred sites, bringing together Christian, Jewish, and Islamic traditions. Founded in the 6th century under Emperor Justinian I, the monastery is one of the world’s oldest Christian monasteries and preserves an exceptional collection of historic icons and manuscripts. Pilgrims and hikers often climb Jabal Musa before dawn to experience sunrise over the spectacular mountain landscape. The area is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
