Aswan (أسوان) is a historic city in southern Egypt on the Nile and an important gateway to Nubia. The city is known for its relaxed atmosphere, striking river landscape of granite rocks and palm trees, and important sights, including the Temple of Philae, ancient granite quarries, and the Aswan High Dam. Nubian villages, traditional feluccas, and the islands of the Nile add to the region’s distinctive character. Aswan combines Egypt’s ancient history with vibrant Nubian culture and serves as an important starting point for journeys to archaeological sites in the south, including Abu Simbel.
