Alexandria (الإسكندرية) is a historic coastal city in Egypt and a fascinating center of ancient heritage, culture, and Mediterranean flair. Founded in 331 BC at the initiative of Alexander the Great, it became the capital of Ptolemaic Egypt and one of the ancient world’s leading centers of science, trade, and culture. Alexandria is famous for its legendary ancient library, whose intellectual legacy lives on in the modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina, as well as the Qaitbay Citadel on the Mediterranean shore. The Corniche, historic neighborhoods, and busy harbor shape the cityscape. Today, Alexandria combines its rich past with vibrant modern urban life.
