Description
Rumonge is the fishing town of the southern Burundian lakeshore, where the palm plantations come down almost to the water and the beach fills before dawn with the boats coming in. Oil is pressed from the palms in small workshops along the road. Inland from the town two remnant forests survive, Kigwena on the coastal plain and Vyanda in the hills, both with olive baboons and with chimpanzees that are not habituated, so a sighting is luck rather than a booking. Hot springs bubble up at Mugara, and the road south towards Nyanza-Lac keeps the lake in view the whole way.
