Description
Bujumbura is the largest city of Burundi and its economic centre, spread along the northeastern head of Lake Tanganyika under a wall of green escarpment. The political capital moved inland to Gitega, but the airport, the port and almost everything a traveller needs are still here. South of the centre a string of sand beaches and open air bars runs along the shore, and Rusizi National Park at the river delta holds hippos and a heavy bird list within half an hour of town. The Livingstone and Stanley monument at Mugere marks where the two are said to have travelled together.
