Description

Punta Arenas is the largest city in Chilean Patagonia and the southernmost major city on the South American mainland. Located on the Strait of Magellan, it developed into an important supply and trading port for ships traveling between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans before the opening of the Panama Canal reduced the route's strategic importance. Elegant mansions surrounding Plaza Muñoz Gamero reflect the wealth generated by the region's sheep-farming and wool industry during the late 19th century. Popular excursions include boat trips to Isla Magdalena, home to one of Chile's largest colonies of Magellanic penguins, and visits to the Museo Nao Victoria, featuring full-scale replicas of historic exploration ships. As the main gateway to Torres del Paine National Park and to Antarctic cruises and expeditions, Punta Arenas serves as the starting or ending point for many journeys through Patagonia.
