Description
Easter Island (Rapa Nui) is one of the world's most isolated inhabited islands, a remote volcanic island in the southeastern Pacific Ocean located about 3,700 kilometers (2,300 miles) west of mainland Chile. It is world-famous for its more than 900 monumental Moai statues, created by its Polynesian inhabitants between the 13th and 16th centuries, making it one of the Pacific's most remarkable archaeological landscapes. Among its most iconic attractions are the restored ceremonial platform of Ahu Tongariki with its fifteen Moai, the Rano Raraku quarry where most of the statues were carved, and the ceremonial village of Orongo overlooking the crater of Rano Kau. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Easter Island combines an extraordinary cultural heritage, dramatic volcanic scenery, and the white-sand beach of Anakena, making it one of Oceania's most fascinating destinations.
