Description
The Maipo Valley (Valle del Maipo) is Chile's oldest and most traditional wine region, stretching just south of Santiago to the foothills of the Andes. Regarded as the birthplace of Chilean winemaking, it is best known for its world-class Cabernet Sauvignon wines. Historic wineries such as Concha y Toro, Santa Rita, and Cousiño Macul welcome visitors with guided tours, wine tastings, and insights into the region's long winemaking heritage. Beyond the vineyards, the valley is characterized by rural villages, cycling and hiking trails, and the dramatic backdrop of the Andes. At the eastern edge of the valley, Río Clarillo National Park protects one of the largest remaining areas of Central Chile's Mediterranean sclerophyll forest. Thanks to its close proximity to Santiago, the Maipo Valley is the country's best-known wine destination and one of Chile's most popular day-trip regions.
