The town is known for its laid-back atmosphere, Caribbean cuisine, reggae and calypso rhythms, and tropical beaches such as Playa Cocles, Playa Chiquita, and Punta Uva. Puerto Viejo combines Caribbean flair with dense rainforest, abundant wildlife, and excellent surfing conditions, including the challenging Salsa Brava reef break. With the nearby Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge, the Jaguar Rescue Center, and Bribri communities in the surrounding Talamanca region, the town is an ideal base for discovering the cultural and natural diversity of Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast.
