Description
Pointe-à-Pitre is the commercial centre of Guadeloupe and the point where the two wings of the butterfly meet, so every road and every ferry passes through it. The Mémorial ACTe stands on the site of the Darboussier sugar works as a museum of slavery and the slave trade, built in black granite laced with silver. The Saint-Antoine market sells spices and vanilla under awnings, and the iron-framed church of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul was bolted together to resist earthquakes. Ferries leave the quay for Les Saintes, Marie-Galante and Dominica. The airport at Le Raizet is ten minutes north of the centre. Buses leave the terminal for the whole of both wings.
