Deshaies, Guadeloupe

Deshaies

Guadeloupe · Basse-Terre · 15 m

Description

Deshaies is a fishing village on the leeward coast that looks exactly as a Caribbean village is supposed to, painted wooden houses around a white church with yachts anchored in the bay and restaurants grilling on the waterfront. The BBC has filmed a detective series here for years, which brought a steady flow of British visitors to a place that had none. The botanical garden above the village was laid out in the grounds of Coluche's old estate. Grande Anse, a long crescent of gold sand behind palms, lies just south. The bay is a customs port of entry for yachts.
