Description
The Orinoco breaks into some three hundred channels before reaching the Atlantic, a delta of forty thousand square kilometres where the only roads are water. Camps are reached by boat from Tucupita and consist of stilted huts over a channel. The Warao who live here build the same way and gave the delta its name, which means boat people. Days are spent in a dugout among howler monkeys, macaws and river dolphins, and piranha are fished from the same canoe. Moriche palms cover the levees. Tucupita is the only town of any size in the delta, and the road ends there.
