Description
Canaima national park was listed by UNESCO in 1994 and covers thirty thousand square kilometres of savanna out of which the tepuis rise, flat-topped sandstone blocks nearly two billion years old with vertical walls a kilometre high. Angel Falls drops 979 metres off Auyán-tepui and is the highest waterfall on earth. The village of Canaima sits on a lagoon fed by its own row of falls, and light aircraft from Ciudad Bolívar are the only way in. The boat journey up to Angel Falls needs high water. The falls carry the name of Jimmie Angel, whose aircraft came down on the tepui in 1937 and stayed there.
