Description
Choroní is reached by a road that climbs over the Henri Pittier national park and drops down the far side in more than three hundred bends through cloud forest to the Caribbean. The village keeps a colonial core of coloured houses, and the fishing port of Puerto Colombia sits a kilometre on. Playa Grande is a broad beach of coarse sand under coconut palms with the mountains rising directly behind it. Drumming goes on through the night at the San Juan festival in June. Cacao was grown on these slopes for three centuries. Henri Pittier was the first national park in Venezuela, declared in 1937.
