Short description of Nouakchott
Nouakchott was a village of a few hundred people when it was made a capital, and it has grown into a low sand coloured city of a million with almost no building older than the state itself. What saves the place is the sea itself. Every afternoon the fishing fleet runs its painted pirogues straight up onto the beach north of the port and the catch is sold on the sand in a crush of carts, buyers and gulls. Camels are traded in a yard on the eastern edge. Dust hangs over everything through the dry months.
