Description
Nordfjord runs inland from the coast to the western edge of the Jostedalsbreen ice cap, and the two ends could not be less alike. At Loen a cable car climbs a thousand metres off the fjord in five minutes to a restaurant on the summit of Hoven, which is about as much scenery per minute as Norway offers. Behind it Lovatnet holds meltwater the colour of milk and glass, and the Briksdal and Kjenndal glacier arms come down almost to the road. The old road over Strynefjellet is gravel, unfenced and closed all winter, and it was the main route east for eighty years.
