Description
Chiloé Island (Isla Grande de Chiloé) lies off the coast of Chile's Los Lagos Region and is renowned for its distinctive culture, remarkable wooden architecture, and rich maritime heritage. The archipelago's centuries of relative isolation helped preserve unique traditions, including folklore about sea spirits, witchcraft, and the legendary ghost ship Caleuche. Among its most iconic landmarks are the colorful wooden churches, sixteen of which are designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and the characteristic palafitos, brightly painted stilt houses that line the waterfront of the island's capital, Castro. Chiloé is also known for its hearty cuisine, featuring specialties such as curanto, its lush temperate rainforests, and its rugged Pacific coastline. The archipelago is widely regarded as one of Chile's most culturally distinctive and scenically beautiful regions.
