Description
Limerick (Luimneach) lies on the River Shannon, Ireland’s longest river, and combines medieval heritage with a lively urban culture. The historic centre is defined by King John’s Castle, a Norman fortress built in the early 13th century, and St Mary’s Cathedral, founded in 1168. Around Nicholas Street and King’s Island, traces of the medieval city remain, while the Hunt Museum offers a rich collection of art and antiquities spanning centuries of Irish and European history. Limerick gave its name to the familiar humorous five-line verse form and remains an important cultural centre on the Shannon. Markets, restaurants, museums, galleries and its historic riverside setting make the city an appealing base for exploring the Shannon region and western Ireland.
