Description
Lankaran (Lənkəran) is the humid subtropical corner of Azerbaijan on the Caspian near the Iranian border, where tea and rice are grown and the Talysh mountains rise green behind the coastal plain. The Hirkan forest that covers those slopes is a relict of the Tertiary period, survived the ice ages when the rest of Europe's broadleaf forest did not, and went on the UNESCO list in 2019. The area is also known for its hot springs and for a local claim to unusual longevity that the Soviet Union made much of.
