Description
Ganja (Gəncə) is the second city of Azerbaijan and the birthplace of Nizami Ganjavi, the twelfth century Persian-language poet whose mausoleum stands outside town and whose verse Azerbaijan treats as national property. The centre keeps a red brick Shah Abbas mosque and caravanserai of the sixteen hundreds around a square of plane trees. On the edge of the city stands the Bottle House, a two storey building faced in fifty thousand glass bottles by a man commemorating a brother lost in the war, which is the sort of thing people actually drive here to see.
