Description
Khinalug (Xınalıq) is a village of flat-roofed stone houses stacked up a mountainside at two thousand three hundred metres, one of the highest continuously inhabited places in the Caucasus and reached by a single road that took until 2006 to build. Its two thousand people speak Ketsh, a language isolate spoken nowhere else and by nobody else, and the transhumance routes their shepherds still walk went on the UNESCO list in 2023. Houses are built on the roofs of the houses below them, so the village reads as one continuous stepped structure from across the valley.
