Description
Lamu is a historic island town on the East African coast and is considered the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa. Its Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, is characterized by coral-stone buildings, intricately carved wooden doors, narrow streets, and centuries of cultural influences from Africa, Arabia, Persia, India, and Europe. Donkeys, traditional dhows, and numerous mosques remain part of everyday life. The Lamu Museum and Swahili House Museum offer insights into the region’s history and culture. South of the Old Town lies Shela village, with its expansive sandy beach and coastal dunes. Lamu combines living Swahili traditions with a rich maritime heritage and a relaxed island atmosphere.
