Description
Kutaisi (ქუთაისი) is the second city of Georgia and one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in Europe, the Colchis of the Golden Fleece story and the capital of a united Georgia before Tbilisi. Bagrati Cathedral of 1003 stands on the hill over the town and the Gelati monastery a few kilometres out holds the finest medieval mosaics and frescoes in the country. Cheap flights into its airport have made it the budget gateway to Georgia, and the karst country north of the city has two large show caves and a set of canyons with hanging walkways.
