Description
Kazbegi (ყაზბეგი), properly Stepantsminda, is the last town on the Georgian Military Highway before the Russian border and sits under Mount Kazbek, a five thousand metre dormant volcano that carries a permanent icecap. The Gergeti Trinity Church stands alone on a grassy shoulder at two thousand two hundred metres with the peak directly behind it, and that one view is what brings almost everyone here. The walk up takes about two hours, or a driver will take you in twenty minutes, and the valleys behind the town run up to glaciers and a mineral travertine terrace.
