Description
Batumi (ბათუმი) is the Black Sea resort of Georgia and looks like nowhere else in the country, a subtropical port where a preserved belle époque quarter of Ottoman and Russian merchant houses sits under a skyline of casino towers thrown up since 2010. The beach is pebble rather than sand and the seven kilometre boulevard behind it is the real attraction, with a botanical garden of subtropical planting on the cape north of town. Adjara is the wettest corner of the Caucasus, so the green hills behind the city carry tea plantations and stone arch bridges.
