Description
Kuakata is a beach on the southern rim of the delta where the coast bends far enough west that both the sunrise and the sunset come up out of the sea, which is what Bangladeshis come for and what the local name means. The sand runs eighteen kilometres and is wide and grey and almost empty outside the winter weekends. Rakhine villages behind the dunes were settled by people who came over from Arakan two centuries ago and keep a Buddhist temple with a large bronze figure. The Fatra and Gangamati forests close both ends. It is a seven-hour drive or a night launch from Dhaka.
