Description
Kristiansund is built on four islands around a harbour and made its money drying cod on the rocks for southern Europe, a trade that gave the town its own dish and its own word for it. German bombs flattened almost all of it in 1940, so the centre is post war concrete with a few survivors, and the interest is on the water. The Sundbåten has ferried people between the islands since 1876 and is the oldest public transport still running anywhere. Thirty kilometres southwest the Atlantic Road jumps island to island on eight bridges.
