Short description of Konso
The Konso terraced these dry hills in dry stone and built walled towns on the ridges above them, and they have kept doing it for more than twenty generations, which is what put the landscape on the world heritage list as a living tradition rather than a monument. Each settlement sits inside as many as six rings of basalt wall with a communal house at the centre where the unmarried men sleep. Carved wooden figures mark the graves of men of standing. A gully of eroded sand pinnacles nearby has been nicknamed New York by the guides.
