Short description of Lake Langano
Langano is the brown mineral lake of the rift that people actually swim in, because it carries none of the bilharzia that keeps them out of the clear ones, and a run of lodges along its shore has grown up on exactly that fact. The park next door protects two very different lakes, shallow soda Abijatta where flamingos crowd the edges and deep Shalla in its collapsed caldera with hot springs steaming along the rim. Ostrich and gazelle cross the ground between them. Soda extraction and irrigation have dropped Abijatta's level and the flamingo numbers swing from year to year.
